Why I Wrote ‘Are You Bored?’ – Turning Boredom Into Something Magical
As a children’s book author, illustrator, and educator, one of the things I hear most from kids of all ages is that familiar phrase:
“I’m bored!” or “It’s so boring…”
At first, it sounds like a complaint, but things can really take a turn for the better if we treat that phrase as an invitation or opportunity. A chance to help kids discover that they don’t need constant entertainment, because they already have everything they need to create fun inside their own minds.
That idea became the spark for my picture book, Are You Bored?
The Heart Behind the Book
I wrote Are You Bored? because I wanted to capture the magic moment when a bored child accidentally discovers something new and that spark of curiosity shows up in their eyes.
The story features a group of kids who complain they have nothing to do until they stumble upon books and discover the magic they can bring. It’s silly, lighthearted, and full of fun, but beneath the humor is a message I deeply believe in:
Boredom isn’t a problem - it’s the beginning of a creative adventure.
When we give kids space to be bored, we’re giving them space to explore, imagine, and invent.
What I’ve Seen in Real Life
In today’s fast-paced world, kids are used to instant options: screens, activities, and scheduled playdates. But when that stimulation disappears, they often don’t know what to do with quiet moments.
And that’s okay.
That’s where their imagination comes in and we just need to give it the chance to wake up.
Bringing the Book to Life with Activities
As I developed the book, I knew I wanted to go one step further and support the message with hands-on creativity. That’s why I created:
Printable activity pages to go along with ‘Are You Bored?’,including a maze, word searches, wordplay, and coloring pages.
A free downloadable version of the activity pages available on the official book website.
Colorful printables like bookmarks and art from the book.
A planned Activity Book to be released alongside the official launch.
And more to come! I’m currently working on two additional books to complete the Are You Bored? Book series - stay tuned for details in the coming months.
Let’s Help Kids Use Boredom as a Launchpad
If you’ve ever heard “I’m bored!” and felt unsure what to do - this book is for you, too.
I hope Are You Bored? inspires kids (and grown-ups) to see those moments of boredom as full of potential. Because with the right story - or a blank page - anything is possible.
